Making the Essential Enjoyable & Easy

Making Monday

I've heard it said that how we feel on Mondays is one of the clearest indicators of life satisfaction. Here is a quick thought on how to make Monday—and every day—work better...

Going Fallow

When I look around at how things work, I see seasonality everywhere.

Wisdom literature that has stood the test of time also points toward this truth.

A season of sowing sets the conditions for reaping outcomes we desire.

And a fallow period occurs between cycles—a phase of fertile inactivity setting conditions for the next season of sowing.

This fallow phase is one of renewal and replenishment, but the activity has gone underground, beyond direct observation or conscious agency.

For this reason, it is often a cause for alarm.

We think we are stuck. We think the project is dead. We think we are failing or falling short.

If we are training to improve strength and endurance, or eating differently to change body composition, we think our program is useless or not extreme enough.

So we panic and push, and in my experience, produce more confusion than clarity, more relapse than results.

But it's just another part of the process.

I've come to embrace this fallow period and am learning to relax further into it, trusting more in the greater arc of the creative cycle and its seasons.

When a project goes fallow, I now honor this as a necessary period of fertile inactivity and turn to other projects that are in reaping or sowing phases.

And sure enough, the underground project eventually resurfaces, full of life, ready for the next season of action.

A wise friend once pointed out to me that life gets easier when we stop rushing the seasons.

I would add that we become more effective and productive, too.

Together, let's end the fight to change—
