Making the Essential Enjoyable & Easy

Making Monday

I've heard it said that how we feel on Mondays is one of the clearest indicators of life satisfaction. Here is a quick thought on how to make Monday—and every day—work better...

Possible, Probable, Inevitable

If we want to accomplish anything—whether a big creative project or an aspect of life change—we pass through the stages of possibility, probability, and inevitability.

This PPI framework is helpful for both discerning where we're at and what are our next best steps.

It can also illuminate where we're stalled and what aspect of ourselves to adjust to get rolling again.

Let's look at an example. I'm doing the final write through of my End the Fight to Get Fit book, having gotten the manuscript back from my copy editor.

To get to publication, I first had to see the book as possible. This is the belief stage. I had to believe I had something worthwhile to say about fitness, and that getting a book done was somehow possible.

Second, I had to know how to write a book, or know where or from whom to learn. This is the skills and abilities stage. Once I believed the book was possible and knew I had the skills to write it, the book became probable.

Third, I had to have a process—a what, when, and where of action. With this process in place, completion of the book became inevitable, whether it were to take 3 weeks or 3 years.

I am currently revising 20 pages per day 5 days a week during my morning creative slot. This final write through will be done by next Monday, then the manuscript is off to my designer for layout. Something may come up to disrupt this plan, but if so, I can adjust accordingly.

This is what inevitability looks like.

These phases are not, however, necessarily linear. We can be humming along in a workable process, then be stricken by a crisis of belief, taking us back to rediscovering possibility.

Or we may enter a new phase of the project, realize we're lacking some essential knowledge or skills we missed, and need to find additional resources.

Regardless, when I've gotten stuck on this project—and oh my, yes, that has happened—using the PPI Framework has given quick visibility to where the roadblock originated.

And how to step around it to stay on the path to inevitability.

Together, let's end the fight to change…
