Making the Essential Enjoyable & Easy

Making Monday

I've heard it said that how we feel on Mondays is one of the clearest indicators of life satisfaction. Here is a quick thought on how to make Monday—and every day—work better...

Authentic Self-Esteem

How we regard ourselves seems to delimit our success and fulfillment.

It's as if our happiness, health, and prosperity can only rise to the level at which we value ourselves.

Like a hard ceiling we bump up against.

Much of what I've read in pop culture about self-esteem suggests tips, tricks, and hacks for thinking better of ourselves.

But I've noticed in my own life work—and that of clients—that true self-esteem doesn't move much in response to general encouragement and feel-good vibes.

These may provide a momentary lift, but don't last.

Rather, raising that ceiling becomes possible when we look honestly at how we hold the three aspects of positive self-perception expressed in these statements:

1) I like myself.

2) I trust myself.

3) I believe in myself.

And while assessing these honestly may feel diminishing in the moment, doing so has been the only real remedy I have found.

It's that old “Truth shall set you free” thing.

When we take an honest assessment and filter it through what we truly control, we find agency for legitimate and lasting change.

If I want to better like myself, I can choose to like others more and to behave more likably.

If I want to trust myself more, I can choose to trust others more and to behave in a more trustworthy fashion.

If I want to believe in myself more, I can believe in others more and take more believable action.

One of my mentors put it succinctly…

The way to true self-esteem is to behave estimably.

That's no tip, no trick, no hack.

It's the real activity of living with conscious intention.

And our whole being knows the difference.

Together, let's end the fight to change…
